The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is currently accepting applications for future permanent and/or temporary part-time Facility Operators with Parks, Recreation & Cemeteries. Applications will be accepted and kept on file for a period up to March 31, 2025. Successful candidates for these positions may be offered either a permanent or temporary part-time position dependent on vacancies.
Job description
The Facility Operator is responsible for coordinating and conducting maintenance and operations of municipal recreation facilities and open spaces including arenas, parks, cemeteries, sport fields, pools, beaches, and related grounds and infrastructure. Specific duties may vary according to work location and operating needs.
Essential responsibilities
- Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
- Operate ice resurfacer and/or other specialized equipment, power tools, cleaning and safety equipment, including ice maintenance
- Perform grounds remediation including sport field preparation
- Conduct general hazard assessments of grounds and facilities and report issues to Supervisor
- Pool water balancing, backwashing, and filtration cleaning
- Horticulture plantings, weeding, and mulching
- General custodial duties
- General building and grounds maintenance, including digging, painting, sanding, and repairs
- Maintaining specialized equipment/tools
- Setting up/taking down equipment for special events
- Grounds garbage collection and disposal
- Assume responsibility for the safe operation of the facility during a scheduled shift
- Following established preventive maintenance procedures
- Maintaining facility logbooks and maintenance reports as required
- Coordinating and providing information to contractors or inspection personnel
- Customer service
Essential qualifications
- Secondary School Diploma or equivalent education (i.e., GED certificate) with six (6) months to two (2) years of related experience
- General custodial work (changing light bulbs, sweeping, cleaning rest rooms, waste removal, windows, woodwork, etc.) and building maintenance (painting, etc.) experience preferred
- Basic computer skills
Other qualifications
- Experience/knowledge of arena facility operations (including ice resurface machine experience) an asset
- Experience/knowledge of pool operations an asset
- Experience/knowledge with park and/or sport field preparation and maintenance an asset
- Experience with cemetery operations an asset
- Previous maintenance experience with electrical, plumbing, heating, and ventilation systems an asset
- Experience using specialized equipment/tools (i.e. electric motors, pumps, tractors, etc.) an asset
- Experience setting up for special events an asset
Certifications, memberships, licenses
- Standard First Aid/CPR certificate preferred
- Class "B" refrigeration ticket an asset
- Automated External Defibrillators (AED) training an asset
- Propane handling certificate an asset
- Certified ice technician (CIT) certificate an asset
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certificate an asset
- Certified Parks Inspector (CPI) certificate an asset
- Chainsaw certificate an asset
Work environment/hours of work
- This position works both indoors and outdoors
- This position works weekday, afternoon, evening and weekend hours
COVID-19 Vaccination
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.
Driver’s license/vehicle requirements
Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G (or higher) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. An acceptable driver’s abstract will: be an original document and current (within the previous thirty (30) days); have no more than four (4) demerit points; have no more than two (2) convictions for the same offence; have no criminal code convictions; have no ‘non-medical or administrative’ license suspension in the preceding three (3) years.
Background check requirements
The successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) (working with vulnerable persons) prior to commencement of employment; you must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable persons police check.

Benefits
This permanent/temporary part-time position will receive an hourly wage of $22.00-$23.50 plus vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with the Employment Standards Act.
