The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is accepting applications for future Aquatic Lifeguard/Instructor positions. Applications will be accepted starting July 1, 2022 for a period up to September 30, 2022. Applications will only be kept on file until September 30, 2022. You are encouraged to re-apply each three month period to be considered for future openings.

Job description:

Lifeguards perform supervision, public education and prevention while guarding the pool and deck environment. Instructors provide swimming lesson instruction that follow the Red Cross Swim or Life Saving Society programs and instruction of the delivery of aquatic fitness.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Attend all aquatic training sessions/meetings
  • Maintain qualifications and seek additional training opportunities
  • Follow the policies and procedures in the CKRec Aquatic Manual
  • Maintain a positive image with the public
  • Assist with handling concerns from patrons, parents
  • Guard swims with an emphasis on incident prevention
  • Provide instruction of Red Cross Water Safety program, Aqua Fitness; include  safety education, skills development, endurance and enjoyment in all elements of instruction
  • Ensure all lifesaving equipment is maintained, available and in proper working order to implement trained rescue procedures
  • Perform high level of first aid/rescue techniques following all set emergency procedures
  • Enforce pool rules and admission standards consistently, tactfully and promptly
  • Open, close and clean aquatic facility as scheduled
  • Maintain an accurate daily pool log and incident reports
  • Assist with birthday parties and community events as required
  • Assist with providing customer service as the Front Desk Attendant

Essential qualifications

  • Some secondary school education, with six (6) months to two (2) years of related experience
  • Because of the responsibilities of this position, the candidate must be at least 16 years of age
  • Knowledge of and experience with injury prevention practices, as well as health and safety practices
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal
  • Basic computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software program)

Other qualifications

  • Previous Lifeguard/Aquatic experience working at a public pool or other environment an asset (i.e. beach lifeguard, private pool lifeguard, camp lifeguard, etc.)
  • Previous aquatic leadership/supervision experience an asset
  • Experience in dealing/working with community user demographics (preschool, youth, adult, senior) an asset
  • Experience delivering children’s activities an asset
  • Experience handling cash and making banking deposits an asset

Certifications, memberships, licenses

  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructors certification
  • Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ certification that meets WSIB regulations
  • LSSC National Lifeguard – Pool or Red Cross Pool Lifeguard certification
  • High Five: Principles of Heathly Child Development certification
  • LSSC Lifesaving Instructor an asset
  • CALA /Water Art Certification an asset
  • LSSC Examiner Status an asset

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works weekday, afternoon, evening and weekend hours

Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check prior to commencement of employment.
