The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is currently accepting applications for permanent Regular Part-Time Registered Nurses for Riverview Gardens Long-Term Care facility with the Seniors Services division.

Job description

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for ensuring that a high standard of care is combined with an understanding of the needs of people with long term disabilities and particularly those disabilities associated with aging.

Opportunities are available for Regular Part-Time Category A and Regular Part-Time Category B Registered Nurses:

Regular Part-Time Category A Nurses will be scheduled a minimum of four (4) tours per bi-weekly pay period and may be scheduled up o two (2) additional tours per bi-weekly pay period based on their availability by seniority and equitably.

Regular Part-Time Category B Nurses must be available for scheduling twelve (12) months of the year. Nurses cannot make themselves unavailable for scheduling. They may be scheduled a minimum of two (2) tours per (2) two week pay period.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Provide nursing care in accordance with the administrative policies, medical director's orders, established standards and recognized nursing principles; this care is provided on a shift basis as scheduled in order to ensure that residents of the Home have nursing care 24 hours per day, seven days per week
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by a physician or according to established policies and protocols
  • Complete an individualized plan of care for each resident
  • Assess resident's health status on an ongoing basis and institutes appropriate care measures
  • Monitor, assess, address, document and report symptoms and changes in residents' conditions
  • Operate or monitor medical apparatus or equipment
  • Follow all guidelines as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Coordinate skin and wound care programs according to MOH Long Term Care standards and Services for Seniors best practice policies and procedures
  • Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and attending all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety
  • Working as per CNO standards
  • Maintaining compliance with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021
  • May supervise registered practical nurses and other nursing staff

Essential qualifications

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s Core Values and Competencies
  • Possess a secondary school graduation diploma or equivalent education (i.e. GED certificate) required
  • Completion of a Registered Nurse diploma program or a BScN degree program required
  • Previous general registered nursing experience required
  • RN work experience, or student placement experience, in a long-term care home preferred
  • Completion of a post-diploma geriatric program is desired
  • Additional experience in geriatric, rehabilitation or psychiatric nursing is desired
  • Apply knowledge, skills, judgment and competencies required for safe, independent and inter-disciplinary practice by meeting nursing practice standards as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and other related professional associations
  • Training in appropriate use of restraints and current best practices in least restraint policy
  • Integrate reflection, critical thinking, education and relevant practical experience in problem solving
  • Supervise staff, mentor and orient staff
  • Experience participating in a workplace committee
  • Experience with RAI-MDS charting
  • Familiar with PCC (PointClickCare) / EMAR (Electronic Medication Administration Record)
  • Computer knowledge, including Microsoft Office

Certifications, memberships, licenses

  • Current registration with the Ontario College of Nurses as a Registered Nurse
  • Possess current Standard Level First Aid and Level C CPR certifications
  • Healthcare Provider (C) certification

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works indoors
  • This position works weekday hours, evening hours, weekend hours as well as midnight hours
  • Candidate must be able to accept on short notice call-in hours days, afternoons, midnights, and weekends, which may include four (4) hours shifts and statutory holidays

COVID-19 Vaccination

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

Background check requirements

Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check prior to commencement of employment. A background check may include the following: education/certification verification and employment reference check. This position works with vulnerable residents in a position of trust and authority, on a sustained and regular basis, in a largely unsupervised capacity. A Vulnerable Sector Screen is required (Fixing Long-Term Care Act Section 252 O. Reg. 246/22) prior to being accepted for employment. You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check.

As per the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, all staff members shall promptly provide the employer with a signed declaration disclosing new charges, convictions, orders and restraining orders, consistent with Ontario Regulation Section 253 O. Reg 246/22, with respect to the period since the date the person’s last criminal reference check under subsection (2) was conducted.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

  • Annual Flu immunization is required
  • 2 step TB skin test to be completed within two weeks of starting position
  • The employer may request a “Physical Task Analysis”
  • Bending: frequent twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling; constant stooping (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with activities of daily living; assists with portering residents when needed; preventative skin care by turning residents, re-positioning residents in bed and chair, etc.; administers medications and treatments (i.e. complex wound care) to residents assigned to their care; manages emergency situations when necessary)
  • Walking: constant walking on level surface (up to 28.6 kgs or 63 lbs) (participates in medical rounds with the attending physician; assists residents with activities of daily living; assists with portering residents when needed; obtains and distributes supplies used on the nursing units; participates in indoor/outdoor resident activities; manages emergency situations when necessary)
  • Sitting: constant sitting in a chair (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (participates in "shift report" at start/end of shift; completes written documentation and computerized documentation (assessments, progress notes, etc.) in online charting system in PCC software; develops/maintains care plans for each individual resident)
  • Reaching: frequent reaching above shoulder; constant reaching below shoulder, forward, backward, handling (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with activities of daily living; administers medications and treatments (i.e. complex wound care) to residents assigned to their care; utilizes mechanical lifting devices; obtains and distributes supplies used on the nursing units; monitor/assists residents with meals and nourishments)
  • Lifting: frequent lifting at shoulder, carrying, pushing at or above shoulder, pulling at or above shoulder; constant lifting floor to waist, waist to shoulder, pushing below shoulder, pulling below shoulder (up to 28.6 kgs or 63 lbs) (assists residents with activities of daily living; assists with portering residents when needed; preventative skin care by turning residents, re-positioning residents in bed and chair, etc.; administers medications and treatments (i.e. complex wound care) to residents assigned to their care; utilizes mechanical lifting devices; obtains and distributes supplies used on the nursing units; manages emergency situations when necessary)
  • Standing: constant standing inside (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with activities of daily living; participates in indoor/outdoor resident activities)
  • Hands: frequent fine finger dexterity (movement), gripping, pinching, mousing (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with activities of daily living; administers medications and treatments (i.e. complex wound care) to residents assigned to their care; communication via email; completes computerized documentation (assessments, progress notes, care plans, etc.)

Benefits

This position will receive 15% in lieu of benefits following the successful completion of a probationary period and 4% vacation pay.
