The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is currently accepting applications for permanent part-time Registered Practical Nurses for Riverview Gardens Long-Term Care facility with the Seniors Services division.

Job description

The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is responsible for providing nursing care for residents of the Long-Term Care Home, in accordance with the Standards of Nursing Practice as established by the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Direct and lead the team of Personal Support Worker staff to ensure quality care is delivered to our residents
  • Perform a variety of routine nursing procedures such as distributing medication to residents, taking blood pressure, temperature and pulse, collecting blood and other specimens, preparing residents for tests and surgery, and changing residents' dressings
  • Assist Registered Nurses with such procedures as respiratory therapy and intravenous therapy
  • Provide basic physical and supportive nursing care for residents of all ages, in connection with other members of the health care team (Registered Nurses, Psychiatric Nurses, and Doctors)
  • Monitor residents' progress, report changes in residents' condition and environment, and confer with other health care professionals about the plans for resident care
  • Ensure consistency in approach and optimum benefit for the residents by assessing, and identifying resident goals, planning, implementing, and evaluating the resident's progress
  • Follow all guidelines as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Play an integral role in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of residents
  • Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and attending all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety
  • Provide planned resident-oriented, goal-directed nursing care in accordance with the provincial standards of care
  • Maintain compliance with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 and CNO standards
  • Skin and wound care as per best practice guidelines
  • Supervise Personal Support Workers and students

Essential qualifications

  • Possess a secondary school graduation diploma or equivalent education (i.e. GED certificate)
  • Candidate must have graduated from a Practical Nursing program
  • Completion of a post-diploma geriatric program is desired
  • Previous experience as a Registered Practical Nurse or Practical Nurse preferred
  • Excellent team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Training in appropriate use of restraints and current best practices in least restraint policy
  • Experience with RAI-MDS coding
  • Familiar with PCC (PointClickCare) / EMAR (Electronic Medication Administration Record)
  • Possess computer keyboarding skills

Other qualifications

  • RPN work experience or student placement experience in a setting for care of the elderly an asset
  • RPN work experience, or student placement experience, in a long-term care home an asset
    • Experience directing staff an asset
    • Experience with restorative care
    • Experience participating in a workplace committee

Certifications, memberships, licenses

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as an RPN required
  • Current Standard Level First Aid and Level C CPR certifications
  • Healthcare Provider (C) certificate

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works indoors
  • This position is expected to work a minimum of 22.5 hours per week and could be scheduled up to 37.5 hours (full time hours) per week
  • This position works weekday and weekend hours for days, afternoons, and midnight shifts, which may include statutory holidays
  • Must be able to accept on short notice call-in hours for day, afternoon and night shifts (both weekday and weekend), which may include four (4) hour shifts and statutory holidays

COVID-19 Vaccination

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

Background check requirements

Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check prior to commencement of employment. A background check may include the following: education/certification verification and employment reference check. This position works with vulnerable residents in a position of trust and authority, on a sustained and regular basis, in a largely unsupervised capacity. A Vulnerable Sector Screen is required (Fixing Long-Term Care Act Section 252 O. Reg. 246/22) prior to being accepted for employment. You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check.

As per the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, all staff members shall promptly provide the employer with a signed declaration disclosing new charges, convictions, orders and restraining orders, consistent with Ontario Regulation Section 253 O. Reg 246/22, with respect to the period since the date the person’s last criminal reference check under subsection (2) was conducted.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

  • Annual Flu immunization is required
  • 2 step TB skin test to be completed within two weeks of starting position
  • The employer may request a “Physical Task Analysis”
  • Bending: frequent twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling; constant stooping (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with hygiene, grooming, toileting and dressing; assists residents out of bed, porters residents back and forth to dining room at meal times and to resident activities; preventative skin care by turning residents, re-positioning residents in bed and chair, etc.; administers medications and treatments to residents assigned to their care)
  • Walking: frequent balancing; constant walking on level surface (up to 28.6 kgs or 63 lbs) (porters residents back and forth to dining room at meal times and to resident activities; obtains and distributes supplies used on the nursing units; participates in indoor/outdoor resident activities)
  • Reaching: frequent reaching above shoulder; constant reaching below shoulder, forward, handling (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with hygiene, grooming, toileting and dressing; assists residents with eating their meals; administers medications and treatments to residents assigned to their care; utilizes mechanical lifting devices; obtains and distributes supplies used on the nursing units)
  • Lifting: frequent lifting, at shoulder, carrying, pushing at or above shoulder, pulling at or above shoulder; constant lifting floor to waist, waist to shoulder, pushing below shoulder, pulling below shoulder (up to 28.6 kgs or 63 lbs) (assists residents with hygiene, grooming, toileting  and dressing; assists residents out of bed, porters residents back and forth to dining room at meal times and to resident activities; preventative skin care by turning residents, re-positioning residents in bed and chair, etc.; administers medications and treatments to residents assigned to their care; utilizes mechanical lifting devices; obtains and distributes supplies used on the nursing units; stocks linen/care carts and empties garbage/laundry carts)
  • Standing:  constant standing inside (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with hygiene, grooming, toileting and dressing; participates in indoor/outdoor resident activities)
  • Hands: frequent fine finger dexterity (movement), gripping, pinching (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (assists residents with hygiene, grooming, toileting and dressing; assists residents with eating their meals; administers medications and treatments to residents; communication via email)

Benefits

This position will receive 15% in lieu of benefits following the successful completion of a probationary period and 4% vacation pay.
