The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a permanent full-time Nurse Manager in the Seniors Services division.

Job description

The Nurse Manager is responsible for overseeing the provision of nursing care for the residents of Riverview Gardens under the direction of the Director, Nursing, and in accordance with the ‘Standards of Nursing Practice’ as established by the College of Nurses of Ontario and regulatory requirements under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 and associated regulation.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Lead a team in a fast-paced and constantly changing unionized environment
  • Coordinate in-house pharmaceutical inventory control and distribution procedures
  • Gather statistical data to be used in the nursing quality management program
  • Participate in the admissions, discharges and transfers of residents to or from assigned units
  • Provide for and ensure staff attend all mandatory in-service programs
  • Recommend continuing education opportunities for staff
  • Participate on nursing and facility wide committees as assigned by the Director, Nursing
  • Maintain a good working relationship and establish effective lines of communication with other departments in Riverview Gardens
  • Investigate staff, resident, and family concerns in strictest confidence
  • Support the infection prevention and control program through participation in surveillance, supervision of nursing techniques, and appropriate infection control intervention
  • Conduct daily resident rounds to assess and evaluate resident care, and address resident concerns and problems
  • Direct registered staff in the administration of medications and treatments
  • Assist with investigations related to workers compensation claims
  • Ensure that documentation on resident charts is accurate and complete and in accordance with medical legal guidelines and conforms to policies set by Riverview Gardens
  • Communicate Riverview Gardens' Policies and Procedures to staff, residents and visitors to ensure compliance
  • Oversee the development and coordination of the data submission process and assist with benchmarking the Quality Management Program
  • Oversight and coordination of RAI program

Essential qualifications

  • College diploma or university degree in nursing, with four (4) to six (6) years of related experience
  • Experience in a management position in institutional services within the health care sector and/or long-term care required
  • Registered Nurse experience in a long-term care home required
  • Understanding of operational policies and procedures related to the provision of services in a health care sector relevant to long-term care
  • Experience in working in a unionized work environment
  • Leadership ability with comprehensive knowledge of nursing and health care practices and techniques as they relate to long term care
  • Experience in accreditation and quality assurance
  • Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Other qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Ministry of Long-Term Care Standards related to resident care an asset
  • Additional education in nursing administration, and/or management courses an asset
  • Related experience with geriatrics and rehabilitation in a long-term care environment an asset
  • Working knowledge of Point Click Care (Electronic Health Records program), CIHI (Canadian Institute for Health Information), RAI-MDS (or other similar programs) an asset

Certifications, memberships, licenses

  • Current certification to practice as a Registered Nurse from the College of Nurses of Ontario with no restrictions is required
  • Certification or diploma in Gerontology an asset

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works indoors
  • This position works primarily weekdays
  • This position will be required to work a flexible schedule and may be required to work varying shifts, including days, evenings, nights and weekends as a result of a 24/7 operation. Will also be required to be on “stand by” on a rotating schedule with the other members of the management team

Driver’s licence/vehicle requirements

Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver's license with a reliable motor vehicle is necessary.

Background check requirements

Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check prior to commencement of employment. A background check may include the following: education/certification verification and employment reference check.

This position works with vulnerable residents in a position of trust and authority, on a sustained and regular basis, in a largely unsupervised capacity. A Vulnerable Sector Screen is required (Fixing Long-Term Care Act section 252 O. Reg. 246/22) prior to being accepted for employment. You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check.

All staff members shall promptly provide the employer with a signed declaration disclosing new charges, convictions, orders and restraining orders, consistent with Ontario Regulation section 253 O. Reg 246/22 made under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, with respect to the period since the date the person’s last criminal reference check under subsection (2) was conducted

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

  • Annual flu immunization is required
  • 2 step TB skin test to be completed within two weeks of starting position
  • Walking: frequent walking on level surface
  • Sitting: frequent sitting in a chair
  • Hand: frequent fine finger dexterity and gripping
