The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a permanent part-time Venue Attendant in the Arts & Culture division. This is a permanent part-time position of up to 30 hours per week. The primary venue of support for this position is Thames Art Gallery and ARTSpace.

 

Job description

The Venue Attendant is responsible for ensuring a positive and welcoming visitor and/or renter experience in the Galleries, Museums and Theatres. Venue Attendants may work in one or more of the following venues: Thames Art Gallery, Capitol Theatre, CK Museum, Milner Heritage House, Ridge House Museum, ARTspace and Kiwanis Theatre.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Ensure a high quality visitor experience and customer service excellence
  • Open and close the venue at the beginning and end of shift, and ensure the security of the venue
  • Check restrooms before and at the end of shift
  • Perform pre and post-shift walk-through of the venue to ensure the area is safe and presentable
  • Ensure volunteers and patrons adhere to the rules of the venue
  • Assist with traffic flow into and out of the venue
  • Alert management to any patron or volunteer problems; document problems and concerns
  • Resolve problems for guests/patrons that may arise during their visit
  • Inform visitors of upcoming shows and exhibits, and act as an ambassador for Arts and Culture programming
  • Ensure visitor safety by knowing and following the facility’s emergency response policies and procedures
  • Handle sales of merchandise, including at gift shops, concession and  merchandise stands, including balancing of credit and debit sales at end of shift
  • Prepare any necessary cash floats and balance cash at end of shift
  • Assist with the care and maintenance of the facilities
  • Record attendance and/or ticket stub collection for the duration of the shift
  • Perform clerical functions as required

 

In addition to the responsibilities above, Venue Attendants working in Theatres will:

  • Leading a team of volunteers, ensure the smooth operations of Front of House (lobby and audience seating area)
  • Keep staff and volunteers alerted to any changes or needs for the night’s performance
  • Ensure that concessions are restocked by volunteer bartenders before end of performance
  • If stationed backstage, notify performers of stage calls, assist with props, and manage traffic in the loading dock, dressing room and wing areas

In addition to the responsibilities above, Venue Attendants working in Galleries and Museums will:

  • Be attentive to artifact and artwork security during each shift
  • Actively engage guests during their visit, through interpretation and guided tours
  • Assist with planning and implementing special events, as well as education and public programming
  • Assist with collections management, exhibit research and design, and artifact care

Essential qualifications

  • Secondary school diploma or equivalent education (i.e. GED certificate), post secondary education preferred, with two (2) to four (4) years of related experience
  • Experience in a customer service environment
  • Experience selling tickets and/or handling cash, and cash float
  • Computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software program)

Other qualifications

  • Experience working in a Theatre, Gallery or Museum environment
  • Experience with planning and implementing special events, and education and public programming
  • Experience with collections management, exhibit research and design, and artifact care
  • Experience leading volunteers

Certifications, memberships, licenses

  • Standard First Aid Certificate
  • SMART Serve (*mandatory for Venue Attendants working in Theatres)

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works predominantly indoors
  • This position works weekday, weekend and evening hours

COVID-19 Vaccination

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

Driver's license/ vehicle requirements

Because this position may be required to travel, including between sites during shifts, a valid Province of Ontario driver's license with a reliable motor vehicle is necessary.

Background check requirements

Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check prior to commencement of employment. A background check may include the following: Police Criminal Record Check and/or Vulnerable Sector check, education/certification verification, and employment reference check.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

  • Walking: frequent walking on level surface (the museum is a level surface, the attendant will have lead groups through the museum (sometimes while walking backward while talking and make rounds through the museum to check on visitors)
  • Sitting: frequent sitting in a chair (depending on season, the attendants may have more desk work to do (i.e. January) when the museum is less frequented by visitors)
  • Hands: frequent fine finger dexterity (movement) (program prep tasks such as cutting out large amounts of craft parts; may do a lot of mousing based on the amount of administrative work left by supervisor; will also have to demonstrate period crafts)
  • Climbing: frequent climbing stairs (museum is 2 levels, Milner and Ridge house consist of several levels of stairs)

Benefits 

This permanent part-time position has an hourly wage of 18.00 to 19.48 and will receive vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
