Job description
The Housekeeping Aide maintains the Home in a clean, orderly condition to provide a safe, pleasant environment for the residents, staff and visitors of the home.
Essential responsibilities
- Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
- Responsible for performing all duties in adherence to the guidelines and regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Fixing Long-Term Care Act, and the policies and procedures of Riverview Gardens and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, Ministry of Long-Term Care
- Responsible for the safe operation of all equipment including vacuums, floor polishers, auto scrubbers, floor machines and any other equipment that pertains to the housekeeping department
- Responsible for safe handling and storage of all chemicals within the Housekeeping Department
- Assist nursing with the portering of residents to the dining room for breakfast
- Assume responsibility for ensuring all store rooms and carts are stocked and secured properly
- Collect all waste material from containers and transports to holding area
- Ensure all rooms and contents within the home are cleaned on a regular basis according to job routines; (washrooms, tub rooms, resident rooms, offices, halls, store rooms, utility rooms, furniture, drapes, etc.) based on daily, weekly or monthly assignments
- Ensure residents' beds are made in the morning, including stripping, cleaning and remaking any beds that are soiled
- Replenish all needed supplies in areas as required such as toilet paper, paper towels, soap, etc.
- Ensuring housekeeping closets are ready and stocked for each weekend
- Report all repairs to maintenance via the work order program, report all needed inventory to the supervisor
- Responsible for communicating concerns expressed by residents, families and staff to the Registered Nurse responsible for the floor
- Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and hazard-free manner. Follow established infection prevention and control procedures to avoid the spread of infection (i.e. hand washing and use of protective clothing /equipment)
- Responsible for attending ongoing in-service training
- In the absence of Supervisor, Environmental Services, or designate, takes direction from the Registered Staff responsible for the resident floor
- Assist, as required, in the orientation of new staff within the Housekeeping department
- Perform other related duties as assigned, which are in accordance with job responsibilities or necessary departmental objectives
Essential qualifications
- Secondary School Diploma or equivalent education (e.g. GED Certificate) required
- Ability to work on a daily basis with hospital grade chemicals, cleaners or detergents required
- Strong customer service skills required
- Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control preferred
- Knowledge of cleaning supplies and related housekeeping equipment preferred
- Ability to set priorities, organize and follow scheduled workload in order to ensure continuing productivity
- Must be pleasant, respectful and patient with residents, families and other visitors in the home
Other qualifications
- Healthcare experience in housekeeping preferred, Long-Term Care experience an asset
- Ability to read, write and follow written and verbal instructions
- Working knowledge of scheduling systems (i.e. PM Worx, Punch Clock, Workforce Edge) (or other similar programs)
- Basic computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Certifications, memberships, licenses
- Member of Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) or Ontario Healthcare Housekeepers’ Association/ISSA an asset
- Health and Safety certification an asset
Work environment/hours of work
- This position works mostly indoors
- There are no guaranteed hours for this position
- This position works weekday hours, afternoon hours, midnights, and weekend hours
- Must be able to accept on short notice call in hours for days, afternoons, midnights and weekends, which may include 4 hour shifts
COVID-19 Vaccination
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.
Background check requirements
This position works with vulnerable residents in a position of trust and authority, on a sustained and regular basis, in a largely unsupervised capacity. A Vulnerable Sector Screen is required (Fixing Long-Term Care Act Section 252 O. Reg. 246/22) prior to being accepted for employment. You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check.
As per the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, all staff members shall promptly provide the employer with a signed declaration disclosing new charges, convictions, orders and restraining orders, consistent with Ontario Regulation Section 253 O. Reg 246/22, with respect to the period since the date the person’s last criminal reference check under subsection (2) was conducted.

- Walking: frequent balancing; constant walking on level surface (up to 13.64 kgs or 30 lbs) (collects all waste material from containers and transports to holding area; utilizes equipment including vacuums, floor polishers, scrubbers, auto scrubber machines (ride-on/step-on); assists with the portering of residents to the dining room for breakfast)
- Sitting: frequent sitting in a chair; constant sitting in vehicle seat type (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (utilizes equipment including ride-on auto scrubber machine; prolonged sitting position when cleaning wheelchairs)
- Reaching: frequent reaching above shoulder; constant reaching below shoulder, forward, handling (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (ensures all rooms and contents are cleaned on a regular basis according to job routines; (washrooms, tub rooms, resident rooms, offices, halls, store rooms, utility rooms, furniture, drapes, etc.); stocks all needed supplies in areas as required (i.e. toilet paper, paper towels, soap, hand sanitizer solution, etc.); stocks housekeeping closets and push carts for each shift)
- Lifting: constant pushing below shoulder (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs) (ensures all rooms and contents are cleaned on a regular basis according to job routines; (washrooms, tub rooms, resident rooms, offices, halls, store rooms, utility rooms, furniture, drapes, etc.) based on daily, weekly or monthly assignments; ensures residents’ beds are made in the morning, including stripping, cleaning and remaking any beds that are soiled; stocks all needed supplies in areas as required (i.e. toilet paper, paper towels, soap, hand sanitizer solution, etc.); stocks housekeeping closets and push carts for each shift; assists with the portering of residents to the dining room for breakfast; prolonged repetitive movements (i.e. dusting, sweeping, mopping, etc.))
- Standing: frequent standing inside (up to 13.64 kgs or 30 lbs) (ensures all rooms and contents are cleaned on a regular basis according to job routines)
- Hands: frequent gripping (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (ensures all rooms and contents are cleaned on a regular basis according to job routines; ensures residents’ beds are made in the morning, including stripping, cleaning and remaking any beds that are soiled; communication via email)
- Foot action: constant one foot action (up to 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (utilizes equipment including ride-on auto scrubber machine)
Benefits
This permanent casual position will receive 15% in lieu of benefits and 4% vacation pay.
