The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has openings for Laundry Aide Student at Riverview Gardens Long-Term Care Home for Winter Break 2022 and Summer 2023. This position will start approximately December 19, 2022 with the possibility of returning May 24, 2023 for a period up to September 15, 2023. This position will have no scheduled hours; may be short notice call in, working weekends and shift work. Hours may be up to 37.5 hours per week.
To qualify for this summer student position, students must currently be enrolled in school full-time for the 2022/2023 winter term (normally ending April, May or June) and/or returning to school full-time in the 2023 fall term (normally starting in August or September).
Job description
The Laundry Aide is responsible for maintaining supplies of clean linens and clothing to residents to meet the needs of the Home and its residents and to comply with Ministry requirements
Essential responsibilities
- Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
- Adhere to the guidelines and regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Fixing Long-Term Care Act 2021, and the policies and procedures of Riverview Gardens, Municipality of Chatham-Kent, and Ministry of Long-Term Care
- Assist with operating commercial washers, dryers and to sort and distribute clean clothing and linens
- Assist in the collection and sorting of soiled personal clothing and linens and pre-treats stains as required
- Deliver linens and clothing to appropriate areas
- Fold, segregate and stack linens and residents' clothing, ironing as required
- Assist with loading and unloading washers and dryers ensuring that proper settings are used and that chemical supplies are at an appropriate level
- Assist with loading linen into carts, transports and places laundry bags down the laundry chute and delivers personal clothing to house laundry room
Essential qualifications
- To qualify for this summer student position, students must currently be enrolled in school full-time for the 2022/2023 winter term (normally ending April, May or June) and/or returning to school full-time in the 2023 fall term (normally starting in August or September)
- Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in environmental sciences
- Healthcare experience, preferably in a Long-Term Care Facility
- Laundry experience, preferably in a health care facility
- Experience with or knowledge of industrial washers and dryers
- Possess ability to work independently
- OHA (Ontario Hospital Association) correspondence courses in environmental services an asset
Work environment/hours of work
- This position works mostly indoors
- This position will work weekday hours, some afternoon hours (4 hour shifts), weekend hours, and be on call after hours and on weekends
- This position is short notice call-in hours

Background check requirements
This position works with vulnerable residents in a position of trust and authority, on a sustained and regular basis, in a largely unsupervised capacity. A Vulnerable Sector Screen is required (Fixing Long-Term Care Act section 252 O. Reg. 246/22) prior to being accepted for employment. You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check
As per the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, all staff members shall promptly provide the employer with a signed declaration disclosing new charges, convictions, orders and restraining orders, consistent with Ontario Regulation section 253 O. Reg 246/22 made under the Fixing Long-Term Care with respect to the period since the date the person's last criminal reference check under subsection (2) was conducted.
Essential physical and/or safety requirements
- Under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, all employees are required to provide evidence of, or submit to, a 2-step TB skin test
- Have physical strength and ability to lift moderate to heavy objects up to 50 lbs
- This position requires the employee to wear slip resistant footwear while at Riverview Gardens
- Bending: frequent stopping (laundry staff must load & unload washers, driers and carts throughout the day; this will require multiple body positions, particularly for the carts which has shelves at various levels)
- Walking: constant walking on level surface (laundry staff must carry soiled laundry bags from bin to bin and then empty them so they can be loaded into the washing machine; they must also carry linen to place it on the linen cart)
- Reaching: frequent reaching below shoulder, forward (staff must reach arm length to grab and sort linen)
- Standing: constant standing inside (laundry staff are on their feet for the entire shift, other than assigned breaks & lunch)
- Hands: frequent, gripping, pinching (laundry staff are using the hands throughout the day to untangle, fold, sort and match laundry)
