The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has openings for Housekeeping Aide Student to work at Riverview Gardens Long-Term Care Home for the 2022 Winter Break and Summer 2023. This position will start approximately December 19, 2022 with the opportunity to return to work on May 24, 2023. This position may have no scheduled hours; may be short notice call-in, working weekends and shift work. Hours may be up to 37.5 hours per week.

Job description

The Housekeeping Aide Student will perform duties to maintain a clean and orderly condition and provide a safe and pleasant environment for residents, staff and visitors.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Adhere to the guidelines and regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Fixing Long-Term Care Act 2021 and the policies and procedures of Riverview Gardens and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, Ministry of Long-Term Care
  • Assist with ensuring all rooms and contents within the home are cleaned on a regular basis according to job routines based on daily, weekly or monthly assignments
  • Assist with ensuring residents' beds are made in the morning, including stripping, cleaning and remaking any beds that are soiled
  • Follow established procedures to avoid the spread of infection
  • Assist with collecting waste material from containers and transport to holding area in accordance with regulations
  • Responsible for the safe operation of all equipment including vacuums, floor polishers, scrubbers, floor machines, garbage compactor and any other equipment that pertains to the Housekeeping department
  • Responsible for safe handling and storage of all chemicals within the Housekeeping department

Essential qualifications

  • To qualify for this student position, students must currently be enrolled in school full-time for the 2022/2023 winter term (normally ending April, May or June) and/or returning to school full-time in the 2023 fall term (normally starting in August or September)
  • Preference will be given to those students currently enrolled in environmental sciences
  • Healthcare experience, preferably in a Long-Term Care Facility
  • Housekeeping experience, preferably in a health care facility
  • Possess ability to work independently
  • Experience with or knowledge of infection control an asset
  • OHA (Ontario Hospital Association) correspondence courses in environmental services an asset

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works mostly indoors
  • This position will work weekday hours, afternoon hours, evening hours, weekend hours, and be on call after hours and on weekends
  • This position is call-in and scheduled hours, and may have short notice call-in hours for weekdays, afternoon hours, evening hours, and weekend hours, which may include 4 hour shifts

Background check requirements

This position works with vulnerable residents in a position of trust and authority, on a sustained and regular basis, in a largely unsupervised capacity. A Vulnerable Sector Screen is required (Fixing Long-Term Care Act section 252 O. Reg. 246/22) prior to being accepted for employment. You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check

As per the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, all staff members shall promptly provide the employer with a signed declaration disclosing new charges, convictions, orders and restraining orders, consistent with Ontario Regulation section 253 O. Reg 246/22 made under the Fixing Long-Term Care with respect to the period since the date the person's last criminal reference check under subsection (2) was conducted.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

  • Under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, all employees are required to provide evidence of, or submit to, a 2-step TB skin test
  • Have physical strength and ability to lift moderate to heavy objects up to 50 lbs
  • This position requires the employee to wear slip resistant footwear while at Riverview Gardens
  • Walking: constant walking on level surface (staff on their feet walking all day)
  • Reaching: frequent reaching below shoulder (required to make 32 beds)
